Abuelo Rum

Welcome to Ron Abuelo
In 1908, Don José Varela, a Spanish immigrant, started Panama’s first sugar cane plantation in the fertile valley at Pesé and laid the foundation for the country’s most awarded rum. The family business is now three generations later, but you can still taste the same passion and tradition for the craft in every drop of Abuelo (40% vol.).

Our Craft
Ron Abuelo is ‘single estate’ (from crop to bottling only under our own management and on our own property) and belongs to the beloved Spanish style, where it is allowed to mature according to the solera method, as we know it from our sherry tradition. .
As one of the few producers, we still cut the sugar cane from our plantation by hand. This happens during the harvest in February and March, the “Zafra”, with the support of the local population. We do not burn our sugar cane fields, which is what happens at most rum producers. All the residual material is used for the firing process. This is sustainable, saves fossil fuel and CO2 emissions.
