DON DIEGO ENCANTANDOR RUM

Don Diego Encantador Rum is from Panama and is part of Bodegas de America S.A. Panama.

You may think, “where do I know that name from?” That could well be.
Bodegas de America S.A. namely produces Rum Malecon and Ron Malteco for example.
Ron Malteco is rum from Guatemala, right? No, Malteco is produced in Panama according to Guatalamese recipe.

Panama has more than 300 rivers, most of which flow into the Pacific Ocean. Both coasts of the isthmus have deep bays, but the Gulf of Panama is particularly well supplied with deep-water anchorages. Panama also has over 1,600 islands, including the Native American inhabited San Blas Islands in the Caribbean and the Pearls Archipelago (Archipiélago de las Perlas) in the Gulf of Panama. The largest island is the penal colony of Coiba, which is south of the Gulf of Chiriquí.

Panama is tropical, but temperatures vary depending on location and altitude. There is little seasonal change in temperature, with warm days and cool nights throughout the year. The humidity is quite high with an average of 80%. The period of the lightest precipitation is from January to March.

Most of Panama is thick rainforest, with occasional patches of savannah or prairie. In total there are more than 9900 species of flowering plants with the national flower, the Holy Spirit being orchid. Mammals that inhabit the isthmus include the anteater, armadillo, bat, coati, deer, opossum, peccary, raccoon, tapir, and many varieties of the monkey. Reptiles, especially alligators, are numerous along the coasts. Bird life is rich and relies on the presence of migratory birds. Fish is plentiful with the Pacific coast a favored area for recreational fishing.

Obviously, when it comes to Panamanian drinks, the first thing that comes to mind is rum. This is the land of sugar cane, and fermented sugar cane juice is the start of many fine distillations. Rum production in Panama dates back to the early 20th century, when one of the country’s most prominent distilleries, Varela Hermanos SA, was founded by Spanish immigrant Don José Varela Blanco. Today, Panamanian rums are among the best in the world. Panama is still a relatively unsurpassed rum producer, but that will change in the coming years. From the spectacular Ron Abuelo to rums such as Zafra, Bohemi and of course the Don Diego Encantador Rum in two different expressions, the “normal” 1997 vintage with 40% ABV and the 1997 vintage with 57,50% ABV.
